Storing Fresh Meat
Because different processors have different cooking and refrigeration techniques the best-before-dates on the package should be consulted to determine how long a fresh whole turkey can be safely stored in the refrigerator. If your turkey does not have a best-before-date on the package Health Canada recommends making sure the turkey is stored in the refrigerator and used within 2-3 days.
Ground turkey should have a best-before-date on the package, but it is recommended to not keep ground turkey in the fridge for more than 1 day.
Freezing turkey meat
Whole turkeys can be kept frozen for up to 1 year, parts for 6 months and ground turkey for 2-3 months. Once turkey is thawed treat it as you would fresh turkey and do not refreeze until cooked.
Cooked turkey and cold cuts can be stored in a covered container, plastic bag or aluminum foil for up to 4 days in the refrigerator or up to 3 months in the freezer.
NOTE: Do not leave turkey at room temperature for more than two hours! Make sure to keep it hot (above 140⁰F) or refrigerate (below 40⁰ F).
