Comfort Foods that Work For You

With the winter chills, and snow packed sidewalks, we often fall victim of consuming comfort foods for the relaxing soothing effect.  Often these foods are packed with fat, sugar and or salt, which does not favour our waistlines long term.  So just what can you do to overcome these comfort food temptations?  Here are some ‘healthy’ comfort food swaps that are tasty and modern.

  1. Hot Chocolate: Instead of picking one at the corner coffee shop, or mixing up one from a pouch why not go use 1 cup of hot water, 1 tsp cocoa, 1 tbsp honey and a touch of milk for a creamy texture. This shaves almost 200 calories!
  2. French Fries: Buy a bag of precut potato or sweet potato wedges and brush with olive oil, and sprinkle with sea salt and rosemary. Bake at 350F for about 40 minutes.
  3. Potato Chips: put the deep fried version away and go with a bag of lower fat microwave popcorn. Not only do you get the satisfaction of a crunch, with a salt flavour but also add 4 grams of fiber to your digestive system. A very smart move!
  4. Macaroni & cheese: Put the pre made box away, and cook up some whole wheat or rice elbow macaroni noodles yourself. Add a touch of flour for binding, some skim milk for creaminess and grated reduced fat cheese. For a change in taste mix in 1 tsp of Dijon Mustard, with fresh pepper, and mashed up cooked cauliflower for extra fiber.
