Meet Alberta Turkey Farmer

Gary Wurz

Gary Wurz is an Alberta turkey producer and industry leader based at Mialta Farming Company, a Hutterite colony operation near Vulcan, Alberta. After spending 15 years as the colony’s head carpenter, Gary transitioned into poultry management in 2011 and has since built a reputation for hands-on, detail-oriented flock stewardship.

At the heart of Gary’s approach is a commitment to fundamentals and a willingness to innovate. He places a strong emphasis on water quality, feed nutrition, and air management, while continuously evaluating new additives, enzymes, and production practices. He was an early adopter of raised-without-antibiotics programming, successfully managing RWA flocks for four years, and has adopted practical innovations such as switching to canola straw bedding — a change that delivered measurable improvements in brooding outcomes. For Gary, learning is never optional: it is a daily discipline that drives better results for his birds and his operation.

Beyond the barn, Gary is an active voice in shaping Canada’s turkey industry. He serves as a director with Alberta Turkey Producers and as Alberta’s alternate director with Turkey Farmers of Canada, roles he takes on with the same dedication he brings to flock management. He is passionate about growing domestic turkey consumption year-round and expanding opportunities for producers. Whether he is walking his barns at dawn or contributing to national industry discussions, Gary Wurz brings the same philosophy to everything he does: stay curious, keep learning, and go all in.
